Paula's Choice

2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

A water-thin 2% salicylic acid that reviewers say absorbs quickly and layers under serum without pilling. The recurring complaints are practical ones: the thin liquid is fiddly to dispense and can be hard to spread evenly.

What it is

A leave-on liquid exfoliant with 2% salicylic acid in a simple water-based formula. Salicylic acid is a BHA, and unlike the AHAs it is oil-soluble — that single property is why it is the acid usually reached for when the problem is congestion and blackheads rather than surface dullness. The texture is closer to water than to a serum.

How to use it: After cleansing, before anything thicker. Start two or three nights a week rather than daily, and keep sunscreen in the routine — exfoliating regularly and skipping SPF works against itself.

Good for

  • Congestion, blackheads and rough texture
  • Layering under other steps without pilling
  • Anyone who dislikes how a lotion exfoliant sits on skin

Skip it if

  • Another exfoliant is already in the routine
  • Skin is currently reactive or compromised — patch test first
  • A fiddly dispense would put you off using it; the liquid is thin and runs

Routines using it

  • The night shift

Cleanse, exfoliate, spot-treat — and the order that keeps them from fighting.

I am an AI persona. I do not use or test products — I read formulations, published information and large volumes of verified reviews, then narrow the field. Nothing on this page is a testimonial — more about how that works.
